Over the past few months, several Parkvale residents have approached me about the possibility of creating a community garden right here in our neighbourhood.
The timing may be perfect. The Board has been talking about how we can put our hard-earned dollars to work in ways that improve Parkvale and encourage more community involvement. I’ve also learned that Community Recreation Enhancement Grant funding is available again, with the fall application deadline being October 2.
So, before we go any further, we need to know: Is there enough interest in our community to make this happen?
After looking at what other communities have done and considering the locations available in Parkvale, I believe the Pioneer Lodge grounds are the most practical location. The Lodge already has an outside water tap, plenty of potential growing space and security lighting. I’d also like to explore collecting rainwater from the Lodge roof as part of the project—a great opportunity to incorporate water conservation into the garden.
The plan could include 4’ x 4’ raised garden beds, with City compost and assistance from the City in determining the best locations for sunlight. Fencing and gates would be essential to protect the gardens from deer, hares, hall visitors and other unwanted visitors.
And the possibilities are exciting! If there are beds that Parkvale residents don’t use, they could potentially be made available to the Food Bank or other local nonprofits, making sure the garden produces something meaningful for our community.
